For this drawing, I started with a warm, raw sienna color to mass large areas of value throughout. Not far into the drawing, I laid down the cool color of the neutral background, a light gray, and discovered that this warm/cool contrast made the drawing vibrate. This got me thinking that in future drawings I could use toned grounds to activate colors sooner rather than later, especially temperature contrasts. A toned ground or background layer would also make light colored and white lines more visible sooner in the drawing process--I describe in my entry about "Rebecca" how using such pastels and white lines were more versatile and effective than using the eraser brush alone.
